Cleanliness is woven into the heart of Islam. Before standing in prayer, a Muslim must be in a state of ritual purity (ṭahārah) — achieved through wuḍū' or, when needed, ghusl.
"The key to prayer is purification."— Sunan Abī Dāwūd & al-Tirmidhī
Beyond the body, purification is a spiritual reset — the Prophet ﷺ taught that as a believer washes, their small sins fall away with the water.
🤲 How to Make Wuḍū'
Begin with the intention in your heart and say Bismillāh, then wash in this order:
Wash both hands up to the wrists, three times.
Rinse the mouth three times.
Rinse the nose — sniff water in and blow it out, three times.
Wash the face three times, forehead to chin, ear to ear.
Wash the arms to and including the elbows, three times — right then left.
Wipe the head once with wet hands, front to back, and wipe the ears.
Wash the feet to and including the ankles, three times — right then left.
It is recommended to finish by testifying: Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh… — the doors of Paradise are opened for the one who does.
⚠️ What Breaks Wuḍū'
Using the bathroom (urine, stool) or passing wind.
Deep sleep (lying down or losing awareness).
Loss of consciousness (fainting, intoxication).
Anything that requires ghusl (see below).
Your wuḍū' remains valid until one of these occurs — you can pray multiple prayers on a single wuḍū'.
🚿 Ghusl — The Full Purification
Ghusl is required after major events: marital relations or sexual discharge, and at the end of menstruation or post-natal bleeding. It is also strongly recommended before Jumu'ah and the two Eids.
How to perform ghusl
Make the intention and say Bismillāh.
Wash the hands and clean any impurity from the body.
Perform a complete wuḍū' as you would for prayer.
Pour water over the head three times, wetting the roots of the hair.
Wash the entire body, right side then left, ensuring water reaches everywhere.
A completed ghusl also counts as your wuḍū' — you may pray without repeating it.
🏜️ Tayammum — When There's No Water
If water is unavailable or using it would cause harm (illness, no access), Allah has made purification easy through tayammum (dry ablution):
Make the intention and say Bismillāh.
Strike both palms lightly on clean earth or dust.
Wipe the face once with your palms.
Wipe the hands — back of the right with the left, and the left with the right.
"…and if you find no water, then perform tayammum with clean earth."— Qur'an 5:6
