Muhammad ﷺ is the last of Allah's prophets, sent as a mercy to all of humanity. Through him, Allah revealed the Qur'an and completed the message brought by every prophet before him — the call to worship the One God.
"And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds."— Qur'an 21:107
Studying his life — his seerah — is how Muslims come to know and love him, and learn how to live the faith in practice.
Born in Makkah in the Year of the Elephant (570 CE), he was orphaned young — his father died before his birth, his mother when he was six. Raised by his grandfather and then his uncle Abū Ṭālib, he grew up honest and trustworthy in a society full of idol worship and tribal injustice.
So well known was his integrity that his people called him al-Amīn — "the Trustworthy" — entrusting him with their valuables. He married Khadījah رضي الله عنها, a noble businesswoman, and was known for his honesty, kindness, and habit of withdrawing to reflect.
At age 40, while in seclusion in the cave of Ḥirā', the angel Jibrīl came to him with the first words of the Qur'an:
Iqra' bismi Rabbika alladhī khalaq
"Read! In the name of your Lord who created." — Qur'an 96:1
So began 23 years of revelation, calling people to abandon idols and worship Allah alone, to uphold justice, honor the poor and the orphan, and prepare for the Hereafter.
For 13 years in Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslims faced ridicule, boycott, and persecution, yet met it with patience and steadfastness. When the persecution grew severe, Allah commanded the migration — the Hijrah — to Madinah in 622 CE.
In Madinah he established the first Muslim community: building the masjid, uniting rival tribes in brotherhood, drafting a charter of justice for Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and leading the community in worship, governance, and defense.
When ʿĀ'ishah رضي الله عنها was asked about his character, she answered simply: "His character was the Qur'an." He lived everything he taught.
In the 23rd year, after Islam had spread across Arabia, the Prophet ﷺ performed his Farewell Pilgrimage and delivered his famous sermon — affirming the sanctity of life, the rights of women, the equality of all people regardless of race, and the brotherhood of believers. There, Allah revealed:
"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you."— Qur'an 5:3
He ﷺ passed away in Madinah in 632 CE, leaving behind the Qur'an and his Sunnah — a complete guidance that has illuminated the lives of believers ever since.
Part of faith is loving the Prophet ﷺ and sending blessings upon him, as Allah commands. Whenever his name is mentioned, Muslims say ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam ("peace and blessings be upon him").
"Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him."— Sahih Muslim
