Adhān أَذَان
The call to prayer, announced before each of the five daily prayers.
Akhlāq أَخْلَاق
Character and manners — a central part of Islamic practice.
Alḥamdulillāh ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰه
"All praise is due to Allah" — said in gratitude.
Allāh ٱللَّٰه
The Arabic word for the One God.
Aqīqah عَقِيقَة
The sacrifice and celebration to welcome a newborn.
Ashura عَاشُورَاء
The 10th of Muharram, a recommended day of fasting.
Barakah بَرَكَة
Blessing; divine goodness placed in something.
Bismillāh بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰه
"In the name of Allah" — said before beginning an action.
Dhikr ذِكْر
Remembrance of Allah through repeated words of praise.
Du'ā دُعَاء
Supplication; personal prayer and calling upon Allah.
Eid عِيد
A festival; Islam has two — Eid al-Fiṭr and Eid al-Adḥā.
Fajr فَجْر
The dawn prayer, the first of the five daily prayers.
Farḍ فَرْض
An obligatory act of worship or duty.
Ghusl غُسْل
The full-body ritual purification.
Hadith حَدِيث
A recorded saying, action, or approval of the Prophet ﷺ.
Hajj حَجّ
The pilgrimage to Makkah; the fifth pillar of Islam.
Ḥalāl حَلَال
Permissible according to Islamic law.
Ḥarām حَرَام
Forbidden according to Islamic law.
Ḥayā' حَيَاء
Modesty, bashfulness, and a sense of dignity.
Hijrah هِجْرَة
The Prophet's ﷺ migration to Madinah; start of the Islamic calendar.
Ḥijāb حِجَاب
Modest dress, including the headscarf worn by Muslim women.
Iftar إِفْطَار
The meal to break the fast at sunset.
Iḥrām إِحْرَام
The sacred state and garments for Hajj and Umrah.
Imām إِمَام
One who leads the prayer; a community religious leader.
Iqāmah إِقَامَة
The second call announcing that prayer is starting.
In shā' Allāh إِنْ شَاءَ ٱللَّٰه
"If Allah wills" — said about future plans.
Janāzah جَنَازَة
The funeral and funeral prayer.
Jumu'ah جُمُعَة
The Friday congregational prayer.
Ka'bah كَعْبَة
The cube-shaped House of Allah in Makkah; the direction of prayer.
Khuṭbah خُطْبَة
The sermon, given at Jumu'ah and the Eids.
Laylat al-Qadr لَيْلَة ٱلْقَدْر
The Night of Decree in Ramadan, better than a thousand months.
Mahr مَهْر
The marriage gift given by the groom to the bride.
Masjid مَسْجِد
A mosque; the Muslim place of worship.
Niṣāb نِصَاب
The minimum wealth threshold at which zakāt becomes due.
Nikāḥ نِكَاح
The Islamic marriage contract.
Qiblah قِبْلَة
The direction of the Ka'bah, faced during prayer.
Qurbānī قُرْبَانِي
The animal sacrifice offered at Eid al-Adḥā.
Rakʿah رَكْعَة
A unit of prayer with its bowing and prostration.
Ramadan رَمَضَان
The month of fasting; the ninth Islamic month.
Ṣadaqah صَدَقَة
Voluntary charity given for the sake of Allah.
Ṣalāh صَلَاة
The formal prayer; the five daily prayers.
Ṣawm صَوْم
Fasting — abstaining from food, drink, and more from dawn to sunset.
Shahādah شَهَادَة
The testimony of faith; the first pillar of Islam.
Sūrah سُورَة
A chapter of the Qur'an; there are 114.
Sunnah سُنَّة
The example and teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.
Suḥūr سُحُور
The pre-dawn meal eaten before fasting.
Tahajjud تَهَجُّد
The voluntary night prayer.
Takbīr تَكْبِير
Saying "Allāhu Akbar" — "Allah is the Greatest."
Taqwā تَقْوَى
God-consciousness; mindfulness of Allah.
Taraweeh تَرَاوِيح
The special night prayer performed in Ramadan.
Tawḥīd تَوْحِيد
The Oneness of God; the core of Islamic belief.
Tayammum تَيَمُّم
Dry purification with clean earth when water is unavailable.
Ummah أُمَّة
The global community of Muslims.
Umrah عُمْرَة
The "lesser pilgrimage" to Makkah, made any time of year.
Walī وَلِيّ
A guardian; for marriage, the bride's representative.
Wuḍū' وُضُوء
The ablution (washing) performed before prayer.
Zakāt زَكَاة
The obligatory annual charity; the third pillar of Islam.
Zakāt al-Fiṭr زَكَاة ٱلْفِطْر
The charity of food given before Eid al-Fiṭr.
